Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup warm whole milk
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp red food coloring (gel or liquid)
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened for frosting
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix warm milk and water; add yeast and let it froth for about 5 minutes.
  2. In another bowl, whisk flour, sugar, cocoa powder, and salt. Combine with yeast mixture and add melted butter, eggs, food coloring, and vanilla.
  3. Knead dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth. Let it rise in a greased bowl for about an hour until doubled.
  4. For the filling, mix softened butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl.
  5. Roll out dough into a rectangle; spread filling evenly over it. Roll tightly into a log and slice into approximately 12 rolls.
  6. Let rolls rise again in a greased dish for another 30 minutes while preheating oven to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Bake for about 25 minutes until golden brown.
  8. For frosting, beat together cream cheese and butter; gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla until creamy.
  9. Spread frosting over warm rolls before serving.
