  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 9 tbsp unsalted butter (for caramel)
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar (for caramel)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (for caramel)
  • Cream cheese
  • Powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Prepare brown butter by melting unsalted butter over medium heat until golden brown and fragrant. Set aside to cool slightly.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, mix both sugars with the browned butter. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in vanilla and buttermilk until just combined.
  4. Gently fold in dry ingredients until no streaks remain.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for about 36 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. For caramel sauce, melt butter in a saucepan, stir in brown sugar until boiling, then add heavy cream, vanilla, and salt.
  7. For frosting, whip cold cream cheese until smooth; gradually add powdered sugar and fold in some browned butter.
  8. Once cooled, layer the cake with caramel sauce and frosting.
