WELCOME TO The Meal Journal
Hi, I’m Marigold, the thoughtful chronicler behind The Meal Journal, and I’m absolutely delighted to welcome you into my world of mindful cooking and intentional meal creation! I’m passionate about documenting, reflecting on, and sharing the deeper stories behind our daily meals—exploring how food connects us to seasons, memories, and the meaningful moments that make up our lives. Welcome to my contemplative journey through the art of everyday cooking!
Let me share how my love for documenting meals and their stories began. I’ve always been someone who finds meaning in the small, daily rituals that others might overlook. Even as a child, I was drawn to the quiet moments in our kitchen—the way morning light fell across the breakfast table, how the smell of bread baking could transform the entire atmosphere of our home, and the way certain meals seemed to capture the essence of particular seasons or family milestones.
My earliest food memories aren’t just about taste, but about the complete sensory experience of cooking and eating mindfully. I remember keeping a small notebook where I would write down not just what we ate, but how it made me feel, what the weather was like, and who shared the meal with us. This early practice of food journaling helped me understand that meals are so much more than mere sustenance—they’re the threads that weave together the fabric of our daily lives.
It was my English literature professor, Dr. Williams, who first encouraged me to think about food as a form of storytelling. She noticed my tendency to write about meals in my creative assignments and suggested that I explore the narrative potential of cooking and eating. This perspective completely changed how I approached both writing and cooking, helping me see that every meal has the potential to be a meaningful chapter in our personal stories.
During my twenties, I began seriously documenting my cooking journey, not just collecting recipes but recording the circumstances, emotions, and discoveries that surrounded each meal. I found that this practice of mindful meal journaling deepened my appreciation for cooking and helped me develop a more intentional relationship with food and the people I cooked for.
I’ll never forget the evening I realized that my journal entries about meals had become as important to me as the meals themselves. Each entry captured not just what I cooked, but why I chose certain ingredients, how the cooking process made me feel, and what memories or emotions each dish evoked. This discovery led me to understand that cooking is fundamentally an act of creating meaning, not just providing nutrition.
My approach to meal journaling evolved as I shared my writing with friends and family, who began asking for copies of my favorite meal stories and the recipes that inspired them. I discovered that my reflective approach to cooking resonated with others who were seeking more mindfulness and intention in their own food experiences.
Today, at 28, I pour all of that contemplative practice and storytelling passion into The Meal Journal. This blog is my invitation to everyone who senses that cooking and eating can be deeper, more meaningful experiences when approached with intention and awareness. Whether you’re looking to develop a more mindful relationship with food or simply want to find greater satisfaction in your daily cooking routine, I’m here to share the practices that have enriched my own culinary journey.
When I’m not writing about meals and their meanings, you’ll find me tending my herb garden, photographing the changing seasons through my kitchen window, or experimenting with recipes that capture the essence of particular moods or memories.
